Typhoon 5: cast and company members

Saturday, 08 November, 2008 After the last playreading for the Typhoon festival on Saturday evening, a surprise party at Soho Theatre was organised for David Tse to celebrate his time at Yellow Earth.

Some speeches were made and Kazuko Hohki put on a performance backed by Liz Sutherland, Kumiko Mendl, Kwong Loke, Philippe Cherbonnier and Tom Wu.

Here are two photos from the night: (click for a larger view)

Hello,
Just a quick note to say how much I enjoyed the playreading of ' Keeping Up with the Wongs' on Nov 8th. The first half of the play was humourus, well paced and enjoyable. Some really good comedic lines! I really liked the way characters were introduced and how the rilvary between the Wongs was developing.
The second half of the play had some elements that I wasn't entirley convinced with. The death scene of Mr Wong was to be honest, a little bit cliche and over the top. Understandably, the stakes were getting higher and something inevitable would happen to either family, perhaps if this was written differently where we find out later that it was a set up attack? Did Mr Wong have to die so suddenly? Does the audience really need to see the voilent blunder? Sorry, I felt it was unnecessary too.
I didn't understand the "love" story between the daughter and the rebel/vandal boy. How in love was this boy? would he really go that far for her? I didn't feel any real spark/passion/intensity between them to beleive he would vandalize her family's restaurant. The father/daughter relationship could also be developed? What makes her so malicious towards her Dad?
I really do like this script and I see it's potential to cross over many cultural points as dicsussed in the post show talk. I hope to see it someday at the Soho theatre!
Your follow up comments would be appreciated too.

Warm regards,
Melinda

Hi Melinda

Thanks for your feedback on the work-in-progress. I'm pleased that you liked it. The audience response was very encouraging and a final draft of the play is underway which addresses some of the points raised. Watch this space...

Cheers

Andy
