Behind the Chinese Take Away

September, 1997 By company
Directed by Erika Tan / David K.S. Tse (1997)

Multi-media exploration of the British Chinese diaspora during the 1997 Hong Kong handover back to China. Created from oral history, the fears and aspirations of this "invisible" community are made public using video, photography, live music and physical theatre.

What emerges is a collage of diversity, both traditional and hip, reflected in shifting moods and images.

Reviews:

"Excellent use of video projection and images"
London Arts Board

"The central theme of 'the takeaway' - the most staple but passed-over foundation of British Chinese experience - has been brought up to date in a splendid show that interweaves drama, humour, pathos and a delirious visual style to delightful effect. More please!"
British Chinese Artists Association

"Excellent"
City of Westminster Arts Council
