The Maritime Mysteries
June, 2005 The Maritime Mysteries is a spectacular free, outdoor performance which is part of the Greenwich and Docklands Festival. The Maritime Mysteries evokes the power of the sea and its creative and destructive potential in a fantastic spectacle drawing on images, sound and performances from waterfront communities around the world. At the same time, in the wake of the Christmas Tsunami the performance will also act as a memorial for all those who have lost their lives by way of the seas.
We take you to the four corners of the globe on a magical journey that begins in Europe with a Cornish fishing fleet that is overcome by floods. Two lone survivors are swept south to the Bay of Bengal where they encounter an undersea world of weird and wonderful, aquatic life, as they find themselves surrounded by giant jellyfish, seahorses and beautiful mermaids.
The survivors are then swept north to the South China Sea where they are caught up in a turbulent storm of Chinese acrobats which engulfs the actors and the audience. The finale is a spectacular climax involving music, giant dancing puppets, a choir and a boatload of memories for you to take home.
This dazzling performance promises to ‘inspire, astonish and awaken the senses.’
