Our Lady of the Drowned
July, 2006 Presented by Stonecrabs TheatreBy Brazilian Playwright Nelson Rodrigues
Directed by Kwong Loke (Associate Director of YET)
The UK premiere of one of Brazil's foremost playwrights.
The bourgeois house of the Drummond family is set against the world of the dockyard brothel to reveal truths hidden for nineteen years. Misael Drummond's buried past and the fate of his daughter, Moema, will only be resolved by the weight of her forbidden desires, and the revenge she seeks.
Written in 1947, this play, at times humorous and always provocative, is the essence of Rodrigues. His works range from realism to symbolism and brought about a true revolution in the modern theatre, making him a master and one of the finest Brazilian playwrights of all times.
What the critics say…
TIME OUT : "A wonderful discovery."
...beautifully evident on Kwong Loke's spartan stage...conveys the heart of this impossibly claustrophobic story with impressive potency.
...characters are drawn with pinpoint precision, language impeccably cold, clean and uncluttered...the combination is magnetic.
...Bronwyn Lim delivers a superb performance as Moema, the downtrodden daughter.
The STAGE: "Kwong Loke's perfectly paced direction, this production is gripping and tense..."
StoneCrabs - the first theatre company to perform Rodrigues in this country.
