Yellow Voices
Yellow Earth Theatre in partnership withBirmingham Repertory Theatre, Soho Theatre and Young Vic
Yellow Earth Theatre (YET) has run a scheme called Yellow Ink over the past few years to support emerging British East Asian (BEA) writers. For some writers, the initiative has opened the door to other schemes, eg. Playgrounding at Polka, The 50 at Royal Court. Other writers have seen their work produced: Peace Pagoda by Andy Cheung at the Linbury Theatre, ROH2; Andre by Jeremy Tiang at Tabard Theatre; Journeys by Rosaline Ting at Wimbledon Studio; Yellow Gentlemen by Benjamin Yeoh at Oval House and Wolf in the House by Simon Wu.
Yellow Earth Theatre recognises that theatre is created in many different ways, and wishes to widen the remit of Yellow Ink so that dramaturgical support is offered to British East Asian theatre practitioners. Yellow Voices will focus on a small group of three practitioners, who may be British East Asian writers, directors, actors, live artists or designers. We have teamed up with three important producing venues to seek out the best British East Asian theatre.
HOW DOES YELLOW VOICES WORK?
You are invited to send a one page synopsis of the project you would like to submit and a short paragraph on the reasons why you wish to develop this idea. If the project is a written piece, please include three pages of sample dialogue. If the project is non-word based/devised/site-specific/live art, you are asked to include four DVD copies of sample material.
Please include information (max. one page) of your training, experience, reviews and achievements in theatre.
A panel made up of staff from the three venues and Yellow Earth draw up a shortlist, and after interviews, three projects are chosen to be developed over the coming year. Yellow Earth’s Artistic Director and associates will work in partnership with associates from the venues to offer regular dramaturgical support, depending on the nature of the selected pieces, over the course of one year.
OUTCOME
In Nov 2008, Yellow Earth Theatre revived the Typhoon Festival at Soho Theatre in London. Three international East Asian playreadings were presented alongside the three new British East Asian pieces developed during the Yellow Voices initiative. It is hoped that one of the pieces will go on to be produced by Yellow Earth Theatre, in partnership with one of the participating venues in 2009.
Please watch this space for further information as to when next top submit your work for Yellow Voices.
